Mountain Goats are native to the Cayoosh Mountain range. They are tolerant to a wide range of climates. However, they are highly dependent on steep slopes and ridges to avoid predators. Therefore, they are mostly found in remote areas and above the tree line (1,800 to 2,000 m) to be undisturbed during birthing, rearing and foraging. During winter they move towards low-altitude habitats where they find access to forage. Since the Atnarko River is a historic Mountain Goat habitat, the conservation of this range is imperative. The Atnarko River remote, south aspect slopes and the ideal access to foraging sites below tree line constitute a perfect Mountain Goat habitat. The long-term goal is to increase the Atnarko River herd size to the carrying capacity of its habitat. The conservation of the Mountain Goat population in Atnarko River is beneficial for several parties: It will contribute to the maintenance of the regional biodiversity with positive impact on the working relations with First Nations, loggers, outfitters, trappers, hunters and conservationists.
During aerial surveys for Mountain Goats regional biologists have observed an increase in off-road motor vehicle use within sensitive alpine environments of the Atnarko River mountain range of MU. As a jurisdiction with high global responsibility for the welfare of Mountain Goat (Blue-listed) populations the restriction of motor vehicle use within alpine environments will protect local Mountain Goats and is supported by the approved provincial Mountain Goat Management Plan.
Issues:
- The local goat population has decreased
- Motorized activity in the alpine terrain is displacing goats from their summer, fall, and winter ranges
- Growing cougar and wolf predation is increasing goat mortality rates and adding to population decline
- Increased recreational activity by heli-skiing and snowmobiling in the winter is affecting mountain goat displacement
- Increased mountain biking and ATV activity in the summer is affecting mountain goat displacement
Goals:
- Inventory flora and fauna in the mountain goat herd range
- Identify potential threats to goat populations including predators
- Monitor and manage the site to ensure for constant habitat quality
- DNA analyses from scat samples
- Study population dynamics through mapping of scat samples
- Cooperation with First Nations, loggers, hunters, and trappers to design a plan to control the number of predators
- Increase the goat population to carrying capacity of their habitat
- Prohibit motorized activity in sub alpine and alpine goat ranges (above 1500 meter elevation)
- Reduce predation pressure through increased trapping and hunting of cougar and wolf
- Educate interested groups, general public and local communities about responsible natural resource utilization to increase engagement and participation in mountain goat conservation and raise awareness for resource stewardship activities
